Khanpur Dam Suspends Irrigation Water Supply Amid Low Inflows

KHANPUR: Irrigation water supply from Khanpur Dam has been suspended due to a significant drop in water inflow, officials confirmed on Wednesday, marking the third consecutive day of halted distribution to agricultural areas.

The current water level at the dam stands at 1928.79 feet, notably below its full storage capacity of 1982 feet. According to dam authorities, the inflow has dwindled to just 26 cusecs, while the outflow remains at 148 cusecs, leading to an unsustainable deficit and prompting urgent conservation measures.

Officials attributed the declining inflows to changing weather patterns and a shortfall in rainfall within the dam’s catchment area. The suspension of irrigation supply complies with regulatory protocols designed to protect the reservoir’s operational stability during such dry periods.

Drinking Water Supply Remains Stable

Despite the cut in irrigation services, authorities have reassured residents that the drinking water supply to Rawalpindi and Islamabad remains unaffected. Ensuring domestic water needs continues to be a top priority, they added.

Dam management is monitoring the situation closely and plans to resume irrigation distribution once inflow levels stabilize. In the meantime, farmers are urged to conserve water and explore alternative sources to mitigate the impact on crops and irrigation.

Located on the Haro River near Khanpur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Khanpur Dam is a vital resource for both agricultural irrigation and urban water supply across the region.
