Govt to Consult Auto Sector on Used Car Imports, Duty Cuts: SAPM

LAHORE: The government has pledged to involve key stakeholders in the auto industry before finalising decisions on proposals for tariff rationalisation and the import of used cars.

This commitment came from Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) and Minister-in-Charge for Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan during a meeting with Lucky Motor Corporation (LMC) Chairman Muhammad Ali Tabba on Friday.

Mr Tabba voiced concerns about the proposed Tariff Rationalisation Plan, specifically the reduction of duties on completely built units (CBUs) to 15 percent over the next five years.

He noted that while the aim of tariff rationalisation is to make cars more accessible to consumers, the current proposals could negatively affect the domestic auto industry and erode investor confidence.

Mr Tabba also highlighted the Auto Development Policy (ADP) 2016-21, which led to significant investment—about $1.2 billion—from Korean, European, and Chinese automakers for setting up local manufacturing facilities.

He pointed out that the policy had successfully expanded consumer choice, enhanced competition, and generated employment in vehicle assembly and the auto parts sector.
